Helping Schools Understand Grieving Students
Children who experience the loss of a parent or other familymember through a line-of-duty death are likely to face anumber of unique issues. School professionals working withstudents in such circumstances will be able to provide moreeffective support when they understand the distinct aspectsof this experience. The materials in this module are designed as a supplement tothe broader information at the Coalition’s website. They arenot intended to be a stand-alone resource. They were developed collaboratively with the national nonprofit organization Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).
Property Tax Exemption For Spouses
Amendment 4 Approved The Louisiana Property Tax Exemptions for Widowed Spouses of First Responders and Military Personnel, Amendment 4, was on the November 8, 2016, ballot in Louisiana as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment. It was approved.
SB 517 - Act 364 Workers Compensation Continuation for Spouses
To amend and reenact R.S. 23:1233, relative to law enforcement officers; to provide relative to workers' compensation weekly death benefit of the surviving spouse; to allow continuation of benefits upon remarriage; and to provide for related matters.
ACT 558 – HB 604 health insurance for the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
To enact R.S. 40:1665.2(G), relative to financial security for survivors of law enforcementofficers killed in the line of duty; to provide health insurance coverage for the surviving spouse or child of a law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty for a limited time period; to provide for premium payments; and to provide for related matters.
R.S. 17:1681 - 1681.1 educational Benefits for children of louisiana fallen officers.
This benefit is provided through Special Scholarships (R.S. 17:1681 and 1681.1).Any child of a commissioned, full-time police officer who was or is killed or permanently disabled after January 1, 1973, in the course and scope of the performance of his duties, which child is otherwise eligible and meets all of the entrance requirements of a state supported college or university without payment of any fees for tuition, books or other charges, including room and board charges, as long as such child meets the academic standards and complies with the rules and regulations of such college or university required for attendance therein as a fulltime student. In no event shall such scholarship exceed eight semesters for any one child.Further information and application procedures regarding special scholarships can be obtained from the admission's/registrar's office of the college or university and/or the Louisiana Department of Education.
